Scratch Card Fundraising Steps to Success

Scratch card fundraisers can be a quick and easy way to make money for your organization. However, like with any other sale, you will want to ensure that everyone fully understands the process. What follows is what we provide to fundraising groups who choose to sell our scratch cards:

  1. Sponsors receive two participation letters with their order. They are instructed to make copies and hand out the first letter to their sellers at the beginning of their fundraiser and the second just prior to the end
  2. Every seller will get a scratch card fundraising kit at the fundraiser kickoff that includes:
    • One scratch card with coupons
    • One money collection envelope
  3. Once each seller has received their kit they take their scratch cards around to friends, family, neighbors and coworkers and ask for their support
  4. Supporters simply scratch, donate and receive! They ask them to scratch one or more dots and then donate the total amount uncovered. As a thank you, supporters receive a valuable brand name money-saving coupon sheet for every dot that they scratch
  5. Just before the end of their fundraiser sponsors use the second letter to inform their sellers to turn in their scratch card, completed or not, as well as their money collection envelope. Their envelopes should be sealed just prior to the turn in date. Sellers also need to place their name, email address and phone number on the front of the envelope as well

Here are a few tips to help boost seller success for your scratch card fundraiser:

  • Establish a start and end date for your sale. Scratch card fundraising should not take more than about a week to complete
  • Have your sellers encourage people to scratch more than one dot. Every time they scratch and donate, they receive another coupon sheet
  • Make sure that they tell potential supporters why they are raising money
  • Remind your sellers to smile and say ‘thank you’ regardless of whether someone chooses to support them or not
  • Offer an additional fundraising incentive for the first ___ sellers to turn in their completed scratch card and money envelope
  • Periodically remind everyone to keep up with their selling. It only takes a minimal effort as long as you sell a little bit each day
  • Make sure that sellers turn in their completed card and money envelope prior to issuing a second scratch card
  • If you choose to accept checks, make sure that they are written out to your organization
  • Remind your sellers that each scratch card has the potential to raise $100 once all of the dots are scratched and the money has been collected
  • It is advised that you assign two dates during your sale in order to make money collection easier. You will receive a participation form that you can use to keep track of money that has been collected for each seller and what is still outstanding. Have each seller put their name phone number and email address on the form before handing them their scratch card
